BILL OF RIGHTS – SIMPLIFIED FOR FARMERS & EDUCATORS
1. Right to Life
Every person has the right to live and to have their life protected.
➡️ No one should take your life away unlawfully.
2. Equality and Freedom from Discrimination
All people are equal before the law. No one should be treated unfairly because of gender, age, tribe, beliefs, disability, or occupation.
➡️ Every farmer and youth has the right to fair treatment and opportunity.
3. Right to Dignity
Every person deserves respect. Your work, culture, and identity should be honored.
➡️ Coffee farmers’ knowledge and traditions matter.
4. Freedom and Security of the Person
You have the right to be safe, not be tortured, threatened, or treated cruelly.
➡️ Everyone should work and live without fear or abuse.
5. Right to Privacy
Your personal life, family, home, and communication must be respected.
➡️ Authorities and organizations must respect your private information.
6. Freedom of Religion, Belief and Opinion
You can believe, worship, and express your thoughts freely, as long as you respect others.
➡️ Communities are free to preserve their spiritual and cultural practices.
7. Freedom of Expression
You have the right to speak, share ideas, and receive information.
➡️ Farmers, baristas, and students can share knowledge without fear.
8. Freedom of the Media
Media can report freely, and everyone can access independent information.
➡️ Coffee communities should have access to truthful and open communication.
9. Access to Information
You have the right to access public information and data that affects you.
➡️ Farmers should be informed about policies, prices, and regulations that impact their livelihood.
10. Freedom of Association
You can form or join groups, cooperatives, unions, or associations.

11. Right to Assemble, Demonstrate & Petition
You can meet peacefully, hold demonstrations, and petition the government to address issues.

12. Political Rights
Every citizen can register to vote, run for office, and participate in governance.
➡️ Farmers and youth have a voice in decisions that shape their future.
13. Freedom of Movement and Residence
You can travel and live anywhere in Kenya.
➡️ Farmers and students can seek opportunities freely.
14. Right to Property
You can own property, including land, and it cannot be taken without due process and compensation.
➡️ Protects farmers’ land and coffee farms.
15. Labour Rights
Workers have the right to fair pay, safe working conditions, and to join unions.
➡️ Protects farm workers, baristas, and youth trainees.
16. Environmental Rights
Everyone has the right to a clean and healthy environment.
➡️ Encourages sustainable coffee farming and climate action.
17. Economic & Social Rights
You have the right to food, water, health, housing, education, and social security.
➡️ Farmers should not be denied basic needs or opportunities for development including Capacity Development Education e.g. Coffee Value Addition Knowledge and skills
18. Cultural and Language Rights
People have the right to use their language, celebrate their culture, and share traditional knowledge.
➡️ Coffee culture and indigenous practices are protected.
19. Family Rights
The family is recognized and protected as the foundation of society.
➡️ Farmers’ family structures and welfare must be respected.
20. Consumer Rights
Consumers must be protected from unsafe goods and unfair business practices.
➡️ Ensures honesty in coffee trade and quality for buyers.
⚖ 21. Fair Administrative Action
Government decisions that affect you must be lawful, fair, and timely.
➡️ Farmers should get fair treatment from institutions and authorities.
⚖ 22. Access to Justice
Everyone has the right to go to court or seek legal help when their rights are violated.
➡️ Farmers can defend their rights legally.
23. Rights of Arrested or Detained Persons
Anyone arrested has the right to be informed, treated humanely, get legal help, and a fair trial.
➡️ Protects individuals from police abuse.
Special Note:
The Constitution protects some rights absolutely — they cannot be taken away under any condition:
- Freedom from torture and slavery
- Right to a fair trial
- Right to challenge unlawful detention (habeas corpus)
