MTAANI CIRCULAR ECONOMY PROJECT (MCEP**
**Presented by Kenya Coffee School**
**1. Project Title: **MTAANI CIRCULAR ECONOMY PROJECT**
*(Transforming Coffee Waste into Sustainable Opportunities)*
**2. Introduction & Background**
Kenya is a leading coffee producer, but the industry generates significant waste, including coffee husks, pulp, and wastewater. Most of this waste is discarded, leading to environmental pollution and lost economic opportunities. The **Mtaani Circular Economy Project** seeks to repurpose coffee by-products into valuable resources, promoting sustainability, job creation, and community empowerment.
Kenya Coffee School, in partnership with local farmers, cooperatives, and green enterprises, will implement this initiative to foster a **zero-waste coffee value chain** while uplifting local communities.
**3. Problem Statement**
– **Environmental Impact:** Coffee waste contributes to soil degradation, water pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions.
– **Economic Loss:** Valuable by-products (husks, pulp, etc.) are discarded instead of being converted into profitable products.
– **Unemployment:** Limited income diversification for coffee farmers and youth in coffee-growing regions.
**4. Project Objectives**
1. **Waste Valorization:** Convert coffee waste into bio-products such as organic fertilizer, biofuels, and biodegradable packaging.
2. **Community Empowerment:** Train farmers and youth in circular economy practices for additional income streams.
3. **Environmental Sustainability:** Reduce pollution and promote agroecological farming methods.
4. **Market Linkages:** Establish partnerships with eco-conscious businesses for upcycled coffee products.
**5. Key Activities**
– **Training & Capacity Building:** Workshops on waste recycling, composting, and biofuel production.
– **Pilot Waste Collection Hubs:** Establish decentralized collection points for coffee by-products.
– **Product Development:**
– Organic fertilizer from coffee pulp
– Biomass briquettes from husks
– Mushroom cultivation using coffee waste substrate
– **Awareness Campaigns:** Promote circular economy principles among farmers and consumers.
**6. Expected Outcomes**
**30% reduction** in coffee-related waste pollution in pilot areas.
**500+ farmers & youth** trained in circular economy practices.
**5 new green enterprises** supported in coffee waste upcycling.
**Increased income** for smallholder farmers through by-product sales.
**7. Target Beneficiaries**
– Coffee farmers & cooperatives
– Women & youth groups in coffee-growing regions
– Agribusinesses & eco-entrepreneurs
– Environmental conservation organizations
**8. Implementation Partners**
– **County Governments** (Agriculture & Environment Departments)
– **KIAMISIS SACCOs** (Farmer Cooperatives)
– **Green Energy Africa** (Biofuel Experts)
– **NGOs & Academia** (Research & Training Support)
**9. Sustainability Plan**
– **Revenue Model:** Sale of upcycled products (fertilizer, briquettes).
– **Farmer Cooperatives:** Ownership of waste collection & processing hubs.
– **Scaling Strategy:** Replicate model in other coffee-growing counties.
