The Global Coffee Standard™ (GCS™)

🌍 What is the Global Coffee Standard™ (GCS™)?

The GCS™ is a science‑driven, Africa‑rooted coffee standard created by Alfred Gitau Mwaura of the Kenya Coffee School. Its core mission is to redefine how the world understands, trades, and benefits from coffee.

It directly addresses the long‑standing imbalance where Africa produces some of the world’s best coffee yet receives the smallest share of the global value chain. The GCS™ shifts Africa’s role from raw‑material supplier to standard‑setter.

🎯 Core Objectives and Structure

The GCS™ is not just a certification – it is a complete framework. Its main pillars are:

  1. Farming & Production – agronomy, climate‑smart practices, cherry quality.
  2. Processing & Management – wet/dry milling, quality control, warehousing, logistics.
  3. Barista & Value Creation – brewing science, sensory analysis, coffee culture.
  4. Trade & Market Access – direct trade, branding, digital marketplaces.

The system is designed to create jobs and wealth for African youth across every stage of the coffee value chain, not just at the farm gate.

✨ How is GCS™ Different from Other Standards?

Unlike many international certifications that are designed elsewhere and applied in Africa, the GCS™ is owned by Africa, built for Africa. It empowers local producers to become owners and builders of their own coffee brands, rather than simply exporters of green beans. It emphasises intellectual property, scientific integrity, and direct market linkages.

🚀 Related Initiatives

The GCS™ is often mentioned alongside the Open International Coffee Standard (OICS) and is part of a broader ecosystem at the Kenya Coffee School that includes:

· Coffee Value Analysis (CVA) – to measure and communicate true quality.
· Blockchain‑based traceability – ensuring origin authenticity and transparency.
· Training and accreditation – for farmers, millers, roasters, and baristas.

💎 In Summary

The Global Coffee Standard™ is more than a quality label – it is a movement to reshape the power dynamics of the global coffee industry. It seeks to ensure that coffee‑producing countries, especially in Africa, receive fair economic returns and retain knowledge sovereignty over their own products.
