“Skills Where People Live. Opportunities Where People Need Them.”

S4Impact Projects

Skills 4 Impact (S4impact) serves as the umbrella not-for-profit initiative founded/led through the initiatives of Alfred Gitau Mwaura and Alice Murugi Gathige, with two flagship programmes:

  1. Skills Mtaani Youth Network (SMYN™) — takes practical, market-driven skills directly to communities and youth.
  2. Mtaani Innovation Hubs (MIH™) — establishes community-based physical/digital hubs where young people can train, innovate, access equipment, build enterprises and connect to industry.

The problem S4Impact addresses

Many young people do not necessarily lack potential—they lack accessible, affordable and industry-relevant skills opportunities close to where they live.

At the same time, industries have changing and increasingly specialized skills requirements.

S4Impact therefore proposes a demand-driven skills model:

Industry Demand → Skills Mapping → Community Training → Practical Competency → Industry Linkages → Employment / Enterprise

Instead of expecting every young person to travel to major cities to access training, skills are devolved into the communities.

County Government Partnership Model

S4Impact will partner with County Governments to develop County Skills Devolution Programmes, where each county identifies:

  • High-unemployment youth populations
  • Local economic opportunities
  • Existing industries
  • Emerging industries
  • Skills shortages
  • Community facilities
  • Youth enterprise opportunities
  • Potential employers
  • Local value chains

SMYN™ then delivers on-demand short courses, micro-skills and competency-based training, while MIH™ provides the infrastructure for continuous learning, innovation and practical work.

SMYN™ — Skills Mtaani Youth Network

SMYN™ becomes the mobile/community skills delivery network.

Possible training areas include:

☕ Coffee & Barista Skills
🍹 Mixology & Hospitality
🍳 Food Production & Catering
💻 Digital Skills & AI
🔧 Technical & Artisan Skills
🌱 Agriculture & Agribusiness
📱 Digital Marketing & E-commerce
🏨 Hospitality & Tourism
🚚 Logistics & Delivery
♻️ Circular Economy & Green Skills
🌾 Agrifood Processing
🧑🏽‍💻 Freelancing & Remote Work
🏪 Entrepreneurship & Small Business
📸 Creative & Media Skills
⚙️ Emerging Industry Skills

The important principle is that SMYN™ responds to actual local demand, rather than simply offering courses because they happen to be available.

MIH™ — Mtaani Innovation Hubs

MIH™ becomes the permanent community skills and innovation infrastructure.

A typical hub could provide:

TRAIN → Skills classes and micro-credentials

MAKE → Workshops, laboratories, kitchens, coffee labs, digital studios and maker spaces

INNOVATE → Youth innovation and problem-solving programmes

CONNECT → Employers, industry, mentors and professional networks

CREATE → Startups, cooperatives and community enterprises

WORK → Freelancing, incubation and employment opportunities

GROW → Entrepreneurship and enterprise development

The S4Impact Philosophy

The initiative is built around six principles:

1. Skills Accessibility
Skills should be available within reach of communities.

2. Industry Relevance
Training follows actual economic and industry demand.

3. Practical Competence
Learning should lead to demonstrable ability to perform a task.

4. Youth Opportunity
Training should connect young people to employment, enterprise or further learning.

5. County Devolution
Skills development becomes part of local economic development.

6. Social Impact
The primary objective is community transformation rather than profit.

A flagship programme

S4Impact County Skills Accelerator (CSA™)

A County Government identifies 1,000 young people and conducts a rapid Local Skills & Opportunity Mapping Exercise.

S4Impact then:

Map → Train → Certify → Connect → Incubate → Employ

For example:

1,000 Youth → 20 Skills Areas → 50 Trainers → 10 Community Locations → 5 Mtaani Innovation Hubs → Industry Linkages → Employment & Enterprise

This will be scaled county by county.

Not-for-Profit Positioning

S4Impact, SMYN™ and MIH™ are clearly positioned as social-impact, not-for-profit initiatives.

That does not mean they cannot generate revenue.

It means revenue is primarily used to sustain and expand the social mission, rather than distribute profits to shareholders.

Potential sustainability sources could include:

  • County Government partnerships
  • Development partners
  • CSR programmes
  • Foundations
  • Philanthropic funding
  • Industry sponsorship
  • Training partnerships
  • Equipment donations
  • Community contributions
  • Social enterprise activities
  • Grants
  • International skills-development programmes

A powerful overall statement

S4Impact is a not-for-profit social impact initiative focused on solving unemployment by bringing practical, industry-driven skills directly to communities. Through the Skills Mtaani Youth Network (SMYN™) and Mtaani Innovation Hubs (MIH™), S4Impact works with County Governments, industries, communities and development partners to devolve skills, build local capacity, support innovation and connect young people to employment and enterprise opportunities.

Tagline:

This is ultimately becoming a national “Skills Devolution” model, where every County has a localized S4Impact skills ecosystem built around its own economic opportunities.
